How To Tame An Ovis Complete Taming Guide

The Ovis is one of the most unique and valuable passive creatures available to survivors exploring the wilderness in ARK. Known for providing essential resources like wool and high-yield raw mutton, securing one of these gentle sheep can significantly boost your overall survival efficiency. Understanding how to properly locate, protect, and feed this passive creature is crucial for any player looking to establish a thriving farm setup.
Finding and Transporting an Ovis Safely
Locating an Ovis in the wild can be a challenging task due to their rarity and low health pool. They commonly spawn in grassland or highland regions where aggressive predators frequently hunt. Because wild carnivores will instantly target an unprotected sheep, spotting one from a safe distance using a spyglass is strongly recommended.
To prevent local wildlife from killing the creature before you can feed it, transporting it to a controlled environment is the best strategy. Flying creatures such as an Argentavis can easily pick up a wild Ovis and carry it back to your base. If flyers are restricted, building a temporary wooden pen around the creature or using a land carrier like a Kaprosuchus will keep it secure during the process.
Required Food and Taming Preparation
Unlike standard herbivores that accept berries or standard crops, the Ovis strictly requires Sweet Vegetable Cake to tame. Placing berries in its inventory will not initiate the taming process. Luckily, regardless of the creature's level, an Ovis only requires a single cake to be tamed instantly.
Preparing Sweet Vegetable Cake requires several specific ingredients, including Giant Bee Honey, Sap, Rockarrots, Longrass, Savoroot, Stimulants, and Fiber cooked in a pot. Because this recipe takes time to compile, you should prepare your cake before searching for an Ovis in the wild. Simply place the cake into the far right slot of your hotbar, walk up behind the Ovis, and press the interact button to complete the passive tame.
Maximizing the Utility of Your Tamed Ovis
Once successfully tamed, an Ovis becomes far easier to maintain, as its diet transitions to standard berries. Players can use metal scissors to regularly shear the sheep for wool, which serves as a renewable alternative to pelt in crafting recipes. Investing skill points into the creature's Food stat will allow its wool to grow back at a much faster rate.
Breeding a pair of tamed Ovis creates a reliable livestock system for harvesting raw mutton on demand. Raw mutton is an exceptionally effective taming food for wild carnivores, functioning as a budget replacement for high-tier kibble. Increasing the Health stat on an Ovis before harvesting it with a chainsaw will yield massive amounts of raw mutton, pelt, and hide.
